What is the light telling you?

The paw print on the top of the cover is how the collar talks to you — the light shines through the grain lines inside the big pad. Find the pattern that matches what you’re seeing; each tile below glows the way the real thing does.

Normal — let it be Needs something from you Power off and contact the team

Soft green pulsing

Starting up. The animation plays once each time power comes on.
Do: nothing — steady green comes next.

Steady green

Checking the SD card. Seconds on a small card — noticeably longer on a 1–2 TB card.
Do: wait it out.

Blinking cyan

Looking for its first GPS fix and the time. It gives up after 10 minutes indoors.
Do: keep it outside under open sky. When the blinking stops on its own, it found a fix — that’s the good ending.

Steady cyan

Pairing mode (Bluetooth) — visible to the app and the Configure page for 10 minutes.
Do: connect now. It turns off ~10 s after you disconnect — that’s your confirmation the changes saved.

Off

Running its schedule, or asleep between recording windows. This is the normal state of a healthy, deployed collar.
Do: nothing at all.

Alternating cyan / red

Can’t read the SD card. The collar will restart and try again on its own.
Do: re-seat the card. If it keeps happening, reformat it as exFAT — see SD card notes.

Cyan flash, then red flashes — count them

The startup self-test found a sensor problem. The number of red flashes says which one: 1 motion · 2 compass · 3 light · 4 environmental · 5 GPS · 6 radio.
Do: power off and tell the team the count.

Fast red flicker

The firmware hit an error it can’t recover from on its own.
Do: power off and contact the team.

The other two lights — charging

Near the USB-C port there’s a separate red / green pair that only speaks about charging — don’t confuse them with the paw print.

Red, next to USB-C

Charging. A full charge from empty takes about 2 hours.
Do: leave it plugged in until the green one takes over.

Green, next to USB-C

Battery is full.
Do: unplug and carry on. Neither light on when plugged in? You likely have a charge-only cable — use a data cable.

Wake a sealed collar for pairing

Connect to a collar without opening it — a magnet swipe puts it into pairing mode (what the manual calls BLE mode), with the cover on and the seal untouched.

You need: a magnet (a fridge magnet can work; neodymium is reliable) And: the CollarID app, or Chrome / Edge on a laptop Takes: about 2 minutes Cover: stays on

Hold the magnet on the paw print for 3 seconds

Press it flat against the paw print on the top of the cover, count to three, then pull it away. The collar restarts.

You should see: the soft green startup pulse begins within a couple of seconds.
Nothing happened? Hold the magnet closer to the surface, hold it longer, or use a stronger one — the sensor is under the paw print itself.

Wait through startup

Startup pulse, then steady green while it checks the SD card — usually well under a minute, longer with a very large card.

You should see: the light settle to steady cyan. The collar is now in pairing mode for 10 minutes.
Something else? Alternating cyan / red means an SD card problem; red patterns mean a fault — match what you see in the light decoder.

Connect from your phone or laptop

Open the CollarID app (iOS or Android), or the Configure page in Chrome or Edge, and pick your collar from the list.

You should see: the collar appear by name and connect. When you’re done, disconnect — the cyan light going out ~10 s later confirms your changes are saved.
Not showing up? On the web, only Chrome and Edge can use Bluetooth — Safari and Firefox can’t. And pairing mode switches itself off after 10 minutes: swipe the magnet again for another window.
The other way in: boot with a blank SD card — and what “pairing mode” is, technically

If the collar is open anyway, powering on with a freshly formatted exFAT card (no schedule on it) lands in pairing mode automatically after startup — handy on the bench, no magnet needed.

For the technically inclined: pairing mode is Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) advertising, and it’s the same mode used for schedule changes and firmware updates. The full detail lives in the manual under Entering BLE mode.
